Conociendo nuestra comunidad

Conociendo nuestra comunidad - TASK STATEMENT

______________________________________________________________________

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, persons of Hispanic or Latino origin comprise 12.3%[1] of Durango's population and 12.2% of La Plata County[2]. At Animas High School and in many of the places we tend to frequent, it may be hard to believe that over a tenth of Durango's population is Latino.

We can gain perspective from getting to know people in our community who have had different experiences than we have had. We saw this first hand with our investigation of The Dream Act and our conversation with several members of Compañeros. Now, we are primed to hear more stories about real people and their experiences immigrating to this country. Through these interviews, we have the opportunity to practice our Spanish, be ambassadors from AHS, and get to know another part of our community.

Task
You and a partner will interview en español a Spanish-speaking immigrant in La Plata County with the primary goal of getting to know a member of another sector of our community. After the interview, individually, you will write a human-interest style article for a bi-lingual publication we will create as a class.

*Exact format for the compilation of the final stories is TBD. It depends in part on interest from our class newspaper staff members, interest from local publications, and funds.

Important Steps & Deadlines

*You will receive individual rubrics/descriptions of each step as we approach the due date. This is a general overview. ***Dates are subject to change.***
